Violin Class Descriptions
VIOLIN 1 CLASS DESCRIPTION
Ages 8 to 12
Class Days & Times: Tuesdays & Fridays, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Ages: 8 – 13 (Beginner)
Our Level 1 Violin Ensemble introduces young students to the joy of playing violin while building a strong musical foundation. In this beginner-friendly class, students will learn proper posture, how to hold the violin and bow, and how to read music. Instruction includes open strings, simple scales, basic melodies, and ear training. With the guidance of our expert teachers, students will gain confidence and prepare for their first performance at the Artist Lounge Semiannual Showcase.
Topics Covered
- Posture & Holding: Proper violin and bow position for comfort and performance.
- Bow Technique: Introduction to basic strokes such as détaché and staccato.
- Left Hand: Finger placement, intonation, and first-position scales.
- Music Reading: Notes, rhythms, and symbols in standard notation.
- Scales & Melodies: Playing beginner-level scales and simple tunes.
- Ear Training: Developing listening skills to support intonation and rhythm.
- Music Theory & History: Exposure to beginner music concepts.
- Care & Maintenance: Rosin, tuning, and basic instrument care.
Classroom Etiquette
To ensure a supportive and productive learning environment, all students are expected to:
- Respect: Show courtesy to teachers and peers at all times.
- Be Punctual: Arrive on time and stay for the full class.
- Be Prepared: Bring all materials and be ready to participate.
- Behave Appropriately: Follow instructions, raise hands to speak, and avoid disruptions (cell phones away).
- Stay Focused: Give full attention during lessons, practice, and ensemble playing.

Semiannual Showcase Preparations
All students participate in two annual in-house performances (June & December). Each level performs as part of a combined ensemble. Students will receive music folders and specific instructions from our teachers to prepare for the showcase. Practice rooms are available for extra rehearsal (sign-up sheet at front desk).

VIOLIN 2: CLASS DESCRIPTION
Ages 13 to 17
Class Days & Times: Tuesdays & Fridays, 5:00 – 6:00 PM
Ages: 13 – 17 (Intermediate)
Level 2 builds on the foundation from Level 1, introducing more complex rhythms, bowing patterns, shifting, and ensemble skills. Students refine their intonation, expand their knowledge of scales, and learn how to play in harmony with others. Focus is given to musical phrasing, dynamics, and performance readiness.
Topics Covered
- Bow Technique: Developing smoother legato, spiccato, and dynamic control.
- Left Hand: Shifting between positions, improved finger placement, and vibrato introduction.
- Music Reading: More advanced rhythms and notation, including dynamics and articulations.
- Scales & Pieces: Two-octave scales, simple duets, and intermediate ensemble repertoire.
- Ear Training: Interval recognition and pitch accuracy.
- Ensemble Skills: Following a conductor, blending sound, and playing in sections.
- Music Theory: Introduction to key signatures, time signatures, and phrasing.
Classroom Etiquette
Same as Level 1: respect, punctuality, preparation, focus, and appropriate behavior.

VIOLIN 3: CLASS DESCRIPTION
Ages 18+ (Beginner/Intermediate Adults)
Class Days & Times: Wednesdays & Saturdays, 6:00 – 7:00 PM
Ages: 18+ (Beginner/Intermediate Adults)
Level 3 is designed for adult beginners or intermediate players who want to continue developing their technique in a collaborative, low-pressure ensemble setting. Students focus on improving tone, shifting, vibrato, and sight-reading. Emphasis is placed on expression, musical interpretation, and performing with confidence.

- Bow Technique: Controlling bow speed and pressure for better tone.
- Left Hand: Advanced shifting, vibrato exercises, and intonation accuracy.
- Music Reading: Sight-reading skills and understanding of more complex rhythms.
- Repertoire: Classical pieces, folk songs, and ensemble arrangements.
- Musicality: Dynamics, phrasing, and expressive interpretation.
- Ensemble Skills: Balancing sound, following a conductor, and harmonizing.
- Music Theory: Chords, accidentals, and intermediate notation.

VIOLIN 4: CLASS DESCRIPTION
Advanced Ensemble (Instructor Approval)
Class Days & Times: Thursdays & Saturdays, 7:00 – 8:00 PM
Ages: Advanced (Instructor Approval Required)
Level 4 is designed for advanced students who are ready to master complex repertoire and refine professional-level ensemble skills. Students study advanced bow techniques, intricate rhythms, and musical interpretation while developing stage presence and artistry.
Topics Covered
- Technique: Mastery of vibrato, advanced shifting, double stops, and harmonics.
- Bow Control: Advanced strokes (ricochet, sautillé, martelé).
- Repertoire: Advanced classical works and challenging ensemble arrangements.
- Ensemble Skills: Chamber music techniques, blending, and leadership within sections.
- Music Theory: Advanced concepts such as modulations and extended harmony.
- Performance Skills: Stage presence, interpretation, and expressive phrasing.
Classroom Etiquette
Students are expected to maintain professional rehearsal standards: punctuality, preparation, focused work ethic, and respect for peers and instructor.
